PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
SET UP
Chain 121 sts with MC. SC in 2nd chain from hook and each st around (120 sts).
Clip a removable stitch marker in the first st of the round to mark the BOR, and in every 24th st after to track repeats. Move these markers up each round. You should have one extra stitch that is your BOR slip stitch.
BODY OF COWL
For a seamless project, you can either use a slip stitch at the end of each round to get to the next round, or an invisible join (see video example here by Bella Coco).
TENSION TIPS: CSC is not stretchy. To keep your CSC loose enough for smooth and easy colorwork, you’ll want to ensure that you pull your first loop slightly higher than normal, before proceeding with the rest of the stitch.
If you want to work in PLAIN KNITTING:
-
Continue working colorwork charts until the tube of the cowl measures approx. 22 (26, 30, 34) in [36, 46, 56 (66, 76, 86) cm], approx. 110 (130, 150, 170) rounds, or desired length (i.e. finished circumference).
If you want to ADD COLORWORK:
-
Select your first Doodle chart and work it around the circumference using center single crochet. Once complete, work the next chart in the same manner. Join your contrast color(s) as necessary.
- Knit in colorwork in the round, following your chosen charts, until the tube of the cowl measures approx. 22 (26, 30, 34) in [36, 46, 56 (66, 76, 86) cm], approx. 110 (130, 150, 170) rounds, or desired length (i.e. finished circumference).
Want to plan out your colorwork? Read about Estimating Row Gauge & Chart Height to understand how many rows to plan for your design and then draw it out using our Blank Doodle Master Chart or our Blank Coloring Pages to get creative!
Stop working colorwork before last main color round on your last chart (the grafting round will replace this last main color round).
Break all CCs. Do not Break MC – leave attached for Joining Step.
Block to pattern dimensions prior to grafting.
ASSEMBLY & GRAFTING
Similar to joining with a graft in knitting, you’ll use a tapestry needle to create a new round that seams your cast on round to your final round.
Break your MC with approx. 5x working circumference.

Place the length of yarn for grafting on a tapestry needle, and with the two ends of the cowl aligned as shown in the illustration below, use the Kitchener Stitch to graph the edges of the cowl together.
Pull yarn all the way through for each step. I recommend keeping your stitches slightly loose for 4-5 stitches and then pulling them tight at the same time, continuing until you reach the BOR.
- Insert tapestry needle under the first V/leg of the cast on round, from right to left.
- Insert tapestry needle under the coordinating V/leg of the stitch on the last round, from right to left.
Rep steps 1-2 until all sts have been grafted together. Weave in ends to secure.

FINISHING
Weave in any remaining ends and block to measurements.
ENJOY YOUR NEW COWL!
