PROVISIONAL CAST ON

This method uses waste yarn to hold cast on stitches until we are ready to graft the edges together.

Once you’re ready to take out the cast on, transfer those stitches to a working needle. As you pull the tail of the chain, it unravels. I typically like to do my stitches one at a time, as I unravel, so I don’t drop any stitches. Then you insert the needle into the leading leg of the stitch to pick it up. Once all the stitches are transferred, you’ll be ready to graft it!

GRAFTING / SEAMING

This stitch allows for the grafting of a cast on edge to the live edge, so that the finished item can be joined seamlessly in the round.

Set up: Thread the yarn tail through a tapestry needle. Insert purlwise through 1st st in front, leave on. Insert knitwise through 1st st in back, leave on.

Pull yarn all the way through for each step.

  1. Insert tapestry needle knitwise into first stitch on front needle. Remove from needle.
  2. Insert tapestry needle purlwise into second stitch on the front needle. Do not remove from needle.
  3. Insert tapestry needle purlwise into first stitch on back needle. Remove from needle.
  4. Insert tapestry needle knitwise into second stitch on back needle. Do not remove from needle.

Rep steps 1-4 until all sts have been grafted together

DUPLICATE STITCH

Duplicate stitch is a simple way to add accent color (or a 3rd color) without having to work it as stranded colorwork.

  1. Thread your needle with your accent color yarn.
  2. Locate the stitch you want to accentuate on your knitted piece.
  3. Insert your needle from back to front through the center of the stitch, leaving a small tail on the back.
  4. Create a duplicate stitch by following the path of the original stitch, making sure to keep tension consistent.
  5. Repeat for each stitch you want to accent, weaving in ends neatly as you go.

TWISTED RIBBING

An alternative to standard 1x1 ribbing, this technique twists the knit stitches, creating a polished look.
