PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS
CAST-ON
Provisionally cast on 96, 96, 120 (120, 120, 120) sts, with scrap yarn and crochet hook (or preferred method).
Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker for BOR.
BODY OF COWL
Knit 1 round in main color. If adding Doodle colorwork below, place a stitch marker every 24 sts.
If you want to work in PLAIN KNITTING:
- Continue working in the round, knitting all stitches on all rounds, until the tube of the cowl measures approx. 14, 18, 22 (26, 30, 34) in [36, 46, 56 (66, 76, 86) cm], or desired length (this will be the finished circumference).
If you want to ADD COLORWORK:
-
Select your first Doodle chart and work it around the circumference. Once complete, work the next chart in the same manner. Join your contrast color(s) as necessary.
- Knit in colorwork in the round, following your chosen charts, until the tube of the cowl measures approx. 14, 18, 22 (26, 30, 34) in [36, 46, 56 (66, 76, 86) cm], or desired length (this will be the finished circumference).
Want to plan out your colorwork? Read about Estimating Row Gauge & Chart Height to understand how many rows to plan for your design and then draw it out using our Blank Doodle Master Chart or our Blank Coloring Pages to get creative!
Stop working colorwork before last main color round on your last chart (the grafting round will replace this last main color round).
Break yarn, leaving a tail approx. 5 times the circumference of your cowl.
ASSEMBLY & GRAFTING
For a photo tutorial on finishing your Infinity Cowl, check out our blog How to Graft an Infinity Cowl.
Remove provisional cast-on and place all cast-on stitches onto your spare needle/cable.
Arrange the tube of the cowl in the shape of a “donut”, similar to the finished shape of the cowl
Ensure that you are using the left needle from the live edge, and the opposite needle from the cast on edge (i.e. needles you are working from should be parallel to each other, with both held in your left hand).
Place the tail yarn on your tapestry needle, and with wrong sides of fabric facing each other, graft the live stitches and cast-on stitches together using the following steps. (for detailed instructions, see our full tutorial on Grafting).
Set up: Thread the yarn tail through a tapestry needle. Insert purlwise through 1st st in front, leave on. Insert knitwise through 1st st in back, leave on.
Grafting: Pull yarn all the way through for each step:
- Insert tapestry needle knitwise into first stitch on front needle. Remove from needle.
- Insert tapestry needle purlwise into second stitch on the front needle. Do not remove from needle.
- Insert tapestry needle purlwise into first stitch on back needle. Remove from needle.
- Insert tapestry needle knitwise into second stitch on back needle. Do not remove from needle.
Rep steps 1-4 until all sts have been grafted together.
FINISHING
Secure the remaining tail of yarn, and hide inside the finished cowl using your tapestry needle.
Block to pattern dimensions.
