HOW TO: Grafting Technique
Grafting (previously know as Kitchener Stitch) is a method used to seamlessly graft together two sets of live stitches. This technique is commonly employed for closing the toe of socks or joining pieces of knitting without a visible seam.
You can see this technique in action in Doodle Infinity Cowls.
Here's a step-by-step guide to mastering the Kitchener Stitch:
Materials Needed:
- Two sets of live stitches on needles
- Yarn (matching the project)
- Tapestry needle
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Setup:
1. Position the Needles:
Hold the two needles parallel to each other, with the wrong sides facing each other. Each needle should hold an equal number of stitches.
2. Thread the Yarn:
Cut a length of yarn about three times the width of your project. Thread it through a tapestry needle, leaving a tail for weaving in later.
Grafting:
3. Setup Stitches:
- Insert the tapestry needle as if to purl into the first stitch on the front needle, pull the yarn through, and leave the stitch on the needle.
- Insert the needle as if to knit into the first stitch on the back needle, pull the yarn through, and leave the stitch on the needle.
4. Repeat the Process:
- Now, repeat the following steps until all stitches are worked:
- Front Needle: Insert the needle as if to knit, pull the yarn through, and slip off the stitch.
- Front Needle: Insert the needle as if to purl, leave the stitch on.
- Back Needle: Insert the needle as if to purl, pull the yarn through, and slip off the stitch.
- Back Needle: Insert the needle as if to knit, leave the stitch on.
5. Check Your Tension:
Pay attention to the tension of your stitches to maintain a consistent look. Don't pull too tightly; aim for a tension similar to the rest of your knitting.
6. Finishing:
After grafting all stitches, weave in the yarn end and secure it.
Congratulations! You've mastered the Kitchener Stitch, and your knitting projects are now seamless wonders. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't hesitate to try it a few times until you feel confident in this magical knitting technique. Happy knitting! 🧶✨
